The Gateway Arch and Jefferson National Expansion Memorial

Completed in 1965, the Gateway Arch stands as a symbol for the role St. Louis played in the Westward Expansion of the United States throughout the nineteenth century. At the base of the Arch, the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial represents Thomas Jefferson’s role in opening the West while memorializing the pioneers who shaped the country’s history and Dred Scott who sued for his freedom in the Old Courthouse.
